Project Details

The Government have initiated the Redevelopment works in Tholkappia Poonga at a cost of Rs.42.45 crore to make the Poonga a robust centre in the field of urban wetland eco-system with new additional facilities and infrastructure. Redevelopment works are being carried out by Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust and Greater Chennai Corporation.

Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust is entrusted with the implementation of Redevelopment of Tholkappia Poonga work components viz., Entrance Arch, Watch Tower, Visitor Centre, Viewing Decks, Pathways, Cafeteria, New Toilet block, Spillway bridge, fixing of surveillance camera, amphitheatre, civil miniature model, table miniature model, revamping of interpretation huts, security huts, children’s interactive area, compound wall and other repair works, etc.

Construction of Connecting Skywalk and Improvements to existing causeway as Box culvert in Santhome High Road is entrusted to Greater Chennai Corporation. All redevelopment works are under progress and the Tholkappia Poonga will be opened to public shortly.
